The Ship's Bell Ship’s bells have been used to mark the passage of time on ships at sea for centuries. At first, a half hour glass was used and when the sand ran its course, a seaman rang the “Ship’s bell” every half hour. If you have ever been on the cold wet deck of a ship at sea at night you’ll appreciate the temptation every seaman experienced to turn that half hour glass over before the sand ran out. The sooner to get off watch and below into a warm dry bunk. In the late 19th century, Chelsea designed and perfected a mechanical clock that could withstand the often violent motion of ships at sea (pendulum clocks couldn’t) and added internal ship’s bells. Seamen have cursed (and blessed) their accuracy ever since. Smaller versions of the Ship’s Bell striking clock have become the American classic clock. Today they still go to sea but more often they are found in fine homes and offices. American presidents keep them in the White House and present them to visiting heads of state. The clock’s dial has deeply etched and enameled numerals that can be seen from across a room. If you wish, the bells can be silenced at night. The Ship’s Bell clock is numbered and registered in leather bound movement record books dating back to 1897.

The Special Grand Young America had come into its own and burst onto the international scene at the turn of the 20th century. No longer dependent on Europe for high quality goods, America was now sending its best manufactured products to Europe. Chelsea registers record the first shipments of the Special Grand to dealers in London, Paris, and other European capitals. The Special Grand - a double superlative - that is reflective of the brash self confidence that a young America felt then at the start of the 20th century and experiences again at the beginning of the 21st. A product has to live up to such a name and this one makes easy work of it. Size alone doesn’t tell the story. Please take a moment and read the introductory pages to learn what truly makes the Special Grand a unique timepiece. The Special Grand is a striking clock, sounding the ship’s bells on the hour and half hour. This is a uniquely satisfying way to mark the passage of time that is explained on the back cover. The bells can be silenced at night. The clock’s raised numerals and center piece are gold plated brass. The clock is numbered and registered.

The Barometer Stormy. Rain. Fair. Very Dry. Change ! The Ship’s Bell Barometer forecasts changing weather by measuring change in atmospheric pressure. Sea captains, especially, keep their eye on the barometer to navigate their ships away from approaching storms. If the barometer needle falls to between 28 and 29 inches that means a nor'easter or maybe even a hurricane is approaching. There’s a salty saying- “When the needle falls low, strong winds will blow”. You don’t need to be a ship’s captain to use a barometer. They are easy and fun to use. Just turn the center knob so that the brass needle is over the black barometer needle. Come back in an hour or two and see whether the barometer needle is rising or falling and test your forecasting skills against the Weather Channel. The Ship’s Bell Barometer can be purchased separately or as a matching pair with the Ship’s Bell Clock. The barometer adds beauty and interest to any room. It weighs 20 pounds and stands over 13 inches high and 19 inches wide. The barometer movement is made in France to our specifications and needs no winding.
